Thanks for visiting the site of Wolf Moon Kennel. My name is Charlotte Wolf but that’s only part of the reason for our kennel name. Every full moon has a name and January’s is Wolf. In addition to having a January birthday, I got my first sled type dog in January. And of course, that is also the heart of winter and the sledding season. Put all those bits together and what other name could we have taken?
I have long been following the sled dog scene. My first taste of dogsledding came in the mid-80s venturing up and down Lake Superior’s North Shore in pursuit of teams of eager racers. Then I “caught” one and was catapulted into the mushing world learning dog handling activities. One memorable night I rode a sled for the first time and my feet and heart never touched the ground all the way home. Alaska sent the call of the wild and I spent nearly ten years racing dogs for other kennels.
Dreams of operating a kennel of my own haunted my imagination just beyond my reach. Those dreams suddenly became reality in May 2009 when I got my first team of four dogs. The very next day the opportunity to mush for resort guests was presented and grew into Wolf Moon Kennel Dogsled Rides.
The fun has grown by leaps and bounds. Every rider’s excitement spreads to friends and relatives who want the experience for themselves as well.
In addition to weekly sprint races my racing history includes the Nome - Council 200 which qualified me to race in the renowned Iditarod, an opportunity I lacked time and money to pursue but nevertheless constitutes an honorable part of my experience.
I also spent five seasons covering that race on local radio including providing sound bites to national networks.
Another highlight was managing the dog lot at the end of the Iditarod Trail for three seasons.
A veterinary technician for 24 years, I found ample opportunies to use that training as well.
Having ridden the runners now for 20 years I’m thrilled to have this chance to share my passion for dogs and the out of doors with you.
I look forward to introducing you and your family to the invigorating sport of dogsledding!
